1. JAMES1 HARROD (5184) was born on 25 Apr 1801 at England. He married Sarah Barnes (5185) at England. He died on 25 Feb 1891 at Doniphan, Hall Co., Nebraska, at age 89. He was buried after 25 Feb 1891 at Cedar View Cemetery, Doniphan, Hall Co., Nebraska.
He James according to the Harrod family Bible had about 22 children. Not all children have been named or proven. Sarah Barns I believe was James second wife some children were from the first wife. I am not sure which belonged to whom. He was a farmer, James and Sarah farmed in Winnebago County, Illinois. He immigrated on 31 Aug 1857; from London England with wife and six children.

Hilton (185), daughter of Robert Hilton (4027) and Harriet Jane Barningham (4028), on 3 Mar 1867 at Winnebago Co., Illinois. He died on 23 Jan 1917 at Orange, Orange Co., California, at age 74. He was buried in Feb 1917 at Cedar View Cemetry, Doniphan, Hall Co., Nebraska.

HARROD, William
William Harrod, farmer and stock-raiser, Doniphan, Neb. Born in the
city of London, England, in 1842, Mr. Harrod was one of a family of
twenty-two children, the result of the union of James Harrod and Sarah
(Barnes ) Harrod, natives also of London, England, born in 1801 and 1819,
respectively.
The parents emigrated to America in 1857, settled in
Rockford, Ill., and there followed agricultural pursuits and the dairy
business. He is still living and makes his home with our subject. The
mother died in Illinois in 1869. William Harrod was reared to farm life,
secured a fair education in the schools of London, and was fifteen years of
age when he emigrated to America.
He first worked on his father's farm, and
in 1862 enlisted in Company D, Seventy-fourth Illinois Infantry at
Rockford, for three years, or during the war. He was mustered into service
at the above-named place and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. He
participated in the battle of Perryville, Ky., Stone River, and was taken
with lung trouble, on account of which he was honorably discharded, at
Murfreesboro, in 1863.
He then engaged in farming and was married in
Rockford, Ill., in 1867, to Miss Eldora Hilton, a native of Rhode Island,
and the daughter of Robert Hilton and Harriet (Barningham) Hilton, natives
of England. Mr. and Mrs. Hilton came to Amercia in 1839, settled in Rhode
Island, moved from there to Illinois at an early day, and there the mother
died in 1866. The father still resides in Illinois.
Shortly after his marriage Mr. Harrod moved to Missouri, thence to Jasper
county, Iowa, and in 1874 to Hall County, Neb., where he now has 200 acres
in a good state of cultivation. He first lived in a large dug-out for a number of
years and then erected a good house and barn. He has a fine orchard, and
everything comfortable about his place.
He is a Republicanm and socially is a member of the A. J. Smith Post No. 65,
Doniphan. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
and Mr. Harrod is superintendent of the Sunday-scchool, in which he takes a
very great interest. He is a member of the Farmers' Alliance and a worthy man
in every particular.
To his marriage have been born eleven children, nine now living: Hattie,
Susan (now Mrs.Coon, of Doniphan Township), Dora, William, James, Charley,
Joseph, Edwin and Bertha. Mr. Harrod came to Nebraska, in 1874, during the
grasshopper raid, had limited means, and consequently experienced many
hardships. He,however, was not the man to be so easly discouraged, and
is to-day one of the substantial men of the county.

William Harrod

Funeral Services for William Harrod were held from the Methodist Church in Doniphan Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock and was largely attended by the friends of the deceased and of his family. Rev. Kilburn, of Allen, Neb., former pastor of the church here, and Rev. Hagerman conducted the service. The six sons were pallbearers and with loving hands carried the body of their father to the last resting place in Cedar View cemetery.

William Harrod was born in London, England, February 18,1842. When fifteen years of age he came with his parents to America, locating at Rockford, Ill. After a few years they moved to Memphis, Tenn. Just before the war broke out they moved back to Rockford. He enlisted with Company D, 74th Volunteer Infantry, serving nine months of actual service. On March 3, 1867 he was married to Miss Eldora Hilton, of Burritt, Ill., and lived near Rockford until 1869, when they moved to Iowa. In 1872 they moved to Missouri and in April 1874 they moved to Nebraska and located on a homestead in Hall county, where they made there home until April 1911. To them were born twelve children, two dying in infancy. Besides his wife, Mr. Harrod leaves to morn the loss of a loving father, six sons and four daughters, Mrs. Hattie Siegfried, of Wasco, Ca.; Mrs. Susie Coon, of Oxford, Neb; Mrs. Dora Carriker and William Harrod, of Burwell, Neb.; James of Enid, Okla.; Charles, of Giltner, Neb.; Joseph, Edwin and Burton, of Gillette Wyo.; and Mrs. Bertha Hitt, of Doniphan. Besides is widow and children he leaves 31 grand children and one great grand child. At an early age he united with the Methodist church and was ever a true follower of Christ. He was superintendent of the Asbury Methodist Sunday school for years. In April 1911, he retired from farm life and moved to Orange, Ca. where he hoped to regain his health and enjoy the last few years of his life. After several years of patient suffering he realized the end was near and ask to see his children. Five of them were at his bedside when the death angle came on the morning of January 23,1917, at his home in Orange, Cal., at the age of 74 years, 11 months, 5 days. His children were all here to attend the funeral except Mrs. Siegfried, who was at his bedside and helped to care for him for some time before his death. Few men have made so many warm friends. Among the young people as well as the older ones. He was faithful in the service of his Lord, never missing any service he could attend, and he always spoke an encouraging word to all. His death will leave a vacant place in the community as well as in the family circle but his family and friends can think of him as waiting on the other shore
on 9 Feb 1917. He was (an unknown value) in Jun 1984 at Harrod-Hitt Family Renunion.

He According to Harrold Hitt Edward Stinson had a team of show hores that he showed at fairs & stock shows. Shipped them via rail to shows. Stabled them in Orange, California


Michael Stinson writes:
Edward and Dinah actually had 14 children, 7 of which survived childhood. They ended up as pioneer settlers of the town of Orange in Orange County California. And yes, my grandfather E.G. as he was known was quite famous for showing his teams of matched Belgian draft horses somewhat like the Clydesdales of the Budweiser Beer fame, except that he drove a team of sixteen horses (which has yet to be duplicated). He was almost of rock star fame on the prewar county fair circuit in california.

Funeral services for Glenn Harrod, 94 of Sheridan, the brother of a Gillette man and a long time Campbell County rancher, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mount Pisgah Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating.

Mr. Harrod died Wednesday, June 2,2004 at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan.

He was born March 16,1910 in Ayr, Neb., to Joseph and Alice (Varah) Harrod. He married Cynthia M. Hemenway in Sheridan on May 11,1935. The couple ranched in the Weston area north of Gillette for more than 40 years before retiring to Sheridan.

Mr. Harrod is survived by two daughters, Normalee Materi of Upton and Connie Copper of Lakewood, Colo.: two sons, Joe of Worland and Vic Harrod of Weston: his brother LaVern Harrod of Gillette: five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Memorials in his name can be made to Rocky Point Community Center in care of Joe Harrod, 2159 Papago Drive, Sheridan, WY 82801. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

LaVern Thomas Harrod was born May 13, 1920 in Gillette, Wyoming the son of Joe and Alice (Varah) Harrod. He attended rural schools in Campbell County graduating from Campbell County High School in 1939. On July 16, 1941 he married Lillian Ritter in Gillette, Wyoming. LaVern worked a short time for Rule Ranch near Recluse. He then went to work for the Sheridan Flour Mill for 3 or 4 years. LaVern was Justice of the Peace in Campbell County for 16 years and he also worked as a custodian for the school district, retiring in 1985. LaVern sang for many weddings and funerals. He enjoyed reading with old westerns being his favorites. LaVern also enjoyed gardening with his wife. He was a member of Odd Fellows being a Noble Grand.

LaVern is survived by 1 son, Lee (Lois) Harrod of Hopewell, New Jersey, 1 daughter, Linda (Steve) Neiffer of Gillette, Wyoming, 3 granchildren: Johnathan Harrod, Katheryn Harrod-Kim and Mark Neiffer; and 2 great-grandchildren: William Harrod and James Harrod. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Vera M. Apple

Funeral, services for long time Gillette resident Vera M. Apple 91 will be 11 am. Tuesday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with the Rev. Tim Kadera officiating.
Visitation will bee from 5 to 7 pm. Monday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.
She died Saturday April 14,2002 at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
Mrs. Apple was born Feb. 24,1911 in Doniphan, Neb. The second child of Ed and Pearl (Robb) Harrod.
At the age of four she moved with family to Campbell County where here they lived south of Gillette. She attended local schools and graduated from High School in 1929.
Having taken normal training. She began a teaching career at various county rural schools until her marriage June 15,1938, to William J, "Bill" Apple at Scared Heart Catholic Church in Custer, South Dakota.
They lived on a ranch south of Gillette until moving to town in 1963. Two years ago her health resulted in their move to Beehive Home.
In 1951 she returned to teaching profession where she taught in rural schools until retiring in 1973 after a total of 31 years of dedicated teaching. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Black Hills Teachers College in 1962.
Over the years she was a member of Campbell County Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter V. Peo, Happy Gap and Benefit Homemakers clubs and several samba and bridge groups.
She especially enjoyed her yard and flowers, her work as an election judge for many years, traveling, card games and family and friends.
Mrs. Apple is survived by her husband of 63 years of Gillette: and daughters, Eileen Suchor of Gillette and Audrey Reed of Billings,
Montana: seven grandchildren: six great-grandsons: her sister Irene Reed of Sheridan: her brothers, Lawrence Harrod of Casper and Lonnie Harrod of Danville, Washington: and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
A memorial has been established to benefit the Gillette Campus memorial scholarship fund. Donations may be sent in care of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home 210 W. fifth St., Gillette, WY. 82716.

Funeral services for Lawrence L. Harrod, 88, formerly of Rozet, were at 10 a.m. today at the Historic Post Chapel in Fort Meade in Sturgis, S.D.

A second service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home with burial to follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 42 and Masonic rites provided by Masonic Lodge 28.

Visitation in Sturgis was from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis and from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home.

Mr. Harrod died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Fort Meade Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

He was born Aug. 7, 1916, to Ed and Pearl Harrod in Rozet. He was drafted into the Army on Oct. 2, 1941, and participated in the Battle of Algeria, French Morocco, Sicily, and Naples Forgist. He received two Purple Hearts for wounds sustained on Oct. 16, 1943, and Nov. 14, 1943. He returned home Sept. 12, 1945.

On April 26, 1948, he married Bonnie Lamb in Sheridan.

He retired from the Wyoming State Highway Department after 32 years of service. He was a member of the VFW, Lions, DAV, and Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Harrod is survived by his daughter Louise Hockley of Sturgis; a son, Brian Harrod of Denver; a brother, Lonnie Harrod of British Columbia, Canada; one sister, Irene Reed of Sheridan; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years; his parents; two infant daughters; one son; and three brothers

Biography Information for James R. Hitt
Worked as a ranch hand for his first job away from home. He worked with his cousin Kenneth Harrod for awhile building ranch land dams. later he bought a truck and did contract hauling in the Gillette, Wy area. After he and Etta separated he went to California. Where he found a job on the island of Guam with a contractor building a air strip. After he returned to California he married Helen Richardson. He worked construction and also did some independent trucking.
In 1956 he and Helen went to Alaska for a year. where Ray worked on a striping job for a coal mine. About a year in duration.
He and Helen and there two sons returned to California were Ray again worked construction. Moving to Nevada he went to work for a mining contractor.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator, Mine forman and superintendent. and construction until his retirement when he was 57 after a heart attacked.
Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing. Enjoyed his family and friends. After Helen retired they spent time traveling in there RV They made several trips to Alaska.. until a couple of years before Ray's death after a battle with leukemia. He lived; in Campbell County, Wyoming after moving form Doniphan Nebraska when five years of age with his parents and siblings. Later he lived in California and Nevada and Alaska for about a year. He moved to Carson City, Nevada in 1969 and resided there until his death. He Served in the US Army a short time before WW ll discharged for medical reasons. At 2:30 in the chapel of the Manhattan Bible College, Manhattan, Kansas, Monday afternoon, July 14, 1947, Miss Doris Eileen Hitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Hitt of Gillette, Wyoming, was united in marriage to Melvin Towne, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.V. Towne of Canon City, Colorado, in a lovely double ring ceremony read by Professor W.F. Lown of Manhattan Bible College.
Lohngrin's Wedding March was played by Mrs. Larry Barnes, who also accompanied Mrs. Ben Rock at the organ as she sang, 'I Love You Truly.' The bride was given in marriage by F.O. Weeks. She wore an afternoon frock of white eyelet pique, the material for which was a gift of her sister, Miss Ruth Hitt of Orange, California. Her crown was designed by the bride herself with a double row of pleated pique matching the dress. Her veil of shoulder length was a gift of Mrs. Virgil Feerer. She wore a corsage of pink carnations, and a gold locket, a gift of the groom. The idea of 'something old, new, borrowed and blue' was carried out. Something old was her great grandmother's wedding ring, borrowed a blue was a handkerchief loaned by Genevieve Escritt.
She was attended by Ruth Spurgeon of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, who wore a dress of yellow eyelet batiste, made like the bride's dress, and a corsage of white carnations. Mr. Don Pack of Manhattan served the groom as best man. Ushers were: Orville Evans and Maurice Bigger, Student Ministers of Manhattan Bible College. The groom's mother wore a corsage of white carnations.
For going away the bride chose a Jersey print street dress with white accessories. After a brief honeymoon the couple will be at home at 600 North Juliette, Manhattan, Kansas.
Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. S.V. Towne and daughter, Phyllis Jean, of Canon City, Colorado, parents and sister of the groom.
Mrs. Towne graduated from Campbell Co. High School of Gillette, Wyoming - taught in rural school and one year in Gillette High School; attended Phillips University at Enid, Oklahoma two years, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Manhattan Bible College in May this year.
Mr. Towne also attended Phillips University and is now a Junior in Manhattan Bible College, where he is preparing for the ministry. He now serves the Christian Church in Lincoln, Kansas, as a student pastor.

My father and mother both live in Anaheim where I grew up. My father was born in Orange on the corner of Chapman and Cambridge. The Stinson ranch was in Orange near to where the Anaheim Stadium is located adjacent to the Santa Ana River. My father, after retiring from the Standard Oil Company became a cowboy, his childhood dream. One of my father's childhood friends leased several hundred acres of land in the undeveloped areas above orange (yes there is still a little land left, and even less today) and then imported several hundred steers from mexico to winter over on the grasslands. My father and several other old retired cowboys would then spend about six months a year moving those cows around various pastures before rounding them up in the late spring. My father had to give up the cowboying when he turned 77 because of his back. He then turned over his horse to my daughter.

My daughter inherited her great-grandfather and grandfather's love of horses and still rides today when she gets a chance. He was Teacher assistant in 2003.
